It is no news that Nintendo had been working on a 2D Mario Bros game. It has been presumed that it was going to be a follow up to their New Super Mario Bros. franchise and it may be on 3DS or Wii U. This gaming line had been doing well for Nintendo so it’s only logical that they should keep on pushing it.
But it looks like the next 2D Mario won’t be on the New Super Mario Bros. platform but Super Mario Bros. 4. These are still speculations but they are based on reports coming in that they have purchased a domain ‘Supermario4.com’. And this could be a clear hint that they want to go the way of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 by building on the series that started the Mario craze. This makes sense as well although it is quite unusual of them to make the purchase without hiding their identity because their name is clearly splashed as the listed holder.
On the other hand, they could just be doing something pre-emptive in anticipation of some things they have planned sometime in the future. It is not unheard of that domain names can be registered and kept in the cooler for years till they are needed. But the just the idea of a Super Mario 4 in 2D is exciting enough to make a lover of the series dizzy. So fingers are crossed that Nintendo are really interested in going in this direction.
